Hosting for a Living: Degrees in Hospitality

Hospitality degrees prepare you for careers in hospitality management. Hospitality managers work in the travel, tourism, and hotel industries to make sure that the needs of the guests in their establishments are being met. They might manage hotels, restaurants, or casinos. Managers often oversee particular parts of their businesses, such as marketing or operations. They generally supervise staffs of workers. Because they often present the public faces of their companies, they always must be cheerful, energetic, and helpful.

Degree Programs in Hospitality

Hospitality degrees are available at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s level. Hospitality students take courses in marketing, financial accounting, hotel management, restaurant management, tourism management, human resources, franchising, and legal issues in hospitality. Associate’s degrees can be completed in two years, and bachelor’s degrees usually take four years. Master’s degrees in hospitality are usually master’s in business administration degrees with a hospitality specialization. In order to work in the top hospitality management positions, you nearly always need your MBA.

Salaries in Hospitality

According to the Wall Street Journal, general managers at hotels earn about $103,000 per year as they begin their careers. Hospitality managers who work in hotels might receive other benefits such as free overnight stays. Directors of food and beverages can expect to make about $63,000 starting out.

Hospitality managers have to solve new problems every day. The work can be stressful, and the hours are often long. Hospitality managers’ degrees help them to thrive in fast-paced environments.
