Big Screen Cuisine: The Best Food Movies Ever
Anyone who enjoys food has an opinion about the array of films on the topic. What follows is a list of some good ones. No doubt there are a few omissions - weigh in on your favorites or just organize some food-loving friends for a weekend of cooking and viewing.
- Chocolat- A mouth-watering romance starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche, which highlights the magical powers of chocolate. A talented cast and feel-good story make this a fun film to watch, but be sure to have some good quality cacao products on hand - you’ll want them!
- Fried Green Tomatoes - This chick-flick from the early ’90s highlights some amazing southern food (including a “special” barbecue sauce that plays a crucial role in the plot). Just a few seconds into the close-up shots of the sizzling namesakes of this film will have you searching the Internet for a good recipe for fried green tomatoes.
- Ratatouille - While it’s hard to get excited about animated food, the story of a rat who achieves his dream of working in a high-end Parisian restaurant will give new wings to your culinary dreams. If Remy can do it, so can you!
- Big Night- Risotto may be hip now, but authentic Italian food wasn’t always popular in the U.S., which is the challenge Primo and Secondo must overcome in this film. Sit back and relax as you watch the brothers scramble to pull off a make-or-break Italian feast at their family restaurant.
- Like Water for Chocolate - A visual representation of the deep connection between food and love, this film is a sensual masterpiece. By crafting delicacies such as quail in rose petal sauce, Tita (the main character) expresses her desire for her sister’s husband Pedro. A great movie to share with your soul mate.
